National Equity Fund partner New Hope Housing (NHH) has been recognized as a winner of the 2021 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Americas Awards for Excellence. ULI selected 12 winning developments from across North America, including Cornerstone Community. Cornerstone Community is an innovative collaboration between NHH and Star of Hope (SOH), a 48-acre cutting-edge master-planned community including housing and social services for people experiencing homelessness and at-risk families.
The campus was originally created by SOH to expand its services to better meet the needs of those experiencing homelessness in Houston with the Women & Family Development Center. The center provides emergency care, transitional housing and long-term education and employment opportunities for those they serve. SOH then joined forces with NHH, providing 7 acres to develop New Hope Housing Reed on campus.
Syndicated by NEF, New Hope Housing Reed is NHH’s first supportive housing property for vulnerable families with children, as their previous developments have focused on providing housing for individuals. The complex includes 187 units of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, which include free utilities, a fully equipped kitchen, and washer/dryer units. Complex amenities include a courtyard with playground equipment, an outdoor cooking area, a business center, indoor learning center, libraries and support services including on-site case management.
With both the services and transitional housing provided by SOH, and the permanent affordable housing provided by NHH, Cornerstone Community is designed to lift families from generational poverty through equitable access to the support they need. NEF is proud to support such an innovative solution to providing housing to those in need, which aligns with our mission of finding new ways to expand the availability of affordable housing. Often, working towards this mission means going beyond convention, and forging new collaborations. New Hope Housing and Star of Hope have done both in the creation of Cornerstone Community, and NEF looks forward to continuing to support our partners at New Hope Housing as they work towards a greater future for our industry.
