Dr. Maya Angelou Village Breaks Ground in Detroit

Dr Maya Angelou Villages Groundbreaking
March 08, 2023

Congratulations to our partners at Full Circle Communities (FCC) and Alternatives for Girls (AFG) on the successful groundbreaking at Dr. Maya Angelou Village in Detroit! The event was well-attended with Mayor Mike Duggan, city council representatives, and other important community members and stakeholders.

Located in Detroit's Miller Grove neighborhood on a decade-long vacant land, Dr. Maya Angelou Village will provide 45 units of affordable and permanent supportive housing for individuals and families at risk of homelessness. There will be indoor and outdoor community spaces as well as on-site case management offices for AFG's supportive services. With 100% affordable homes, 22 apartments in this development will be offered at 30-50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and 23 apartments will receive rental assistance from MSHDA's supportive housing program and pay less than 30% of their income regardless of that figure.

The affordable housing community was named after Dr. Maya Angelou with full support of the icon's family. AFG chose Dr. Angelou as the namesake due to her dedication to sharing stories of womanhood and trauma. AFG's mission is to help homeless and high-risk girls and young women prevent violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation.

We are proud of the mission-driven work being done in ensuring at-risk girls, women, and families have a safe, stable, affordable place to live!
