An outdated affordable housing complex built in the 1960's has been reborn as new, accessible affordable housing in the Sheldon Center Oak neighborhood in Harford, CT. The redevelopment transformation of MLK Apartments included:
Old Complex → New Complex
🏠 64 units → 155 units
♿ Townhome style with second floor bathrooms → Three-story fully accessible building with elevator + townhomes
🚶➡️ Few sidewalks, inaccessible layout → Pedestrian-friendly & neighborhood feel with internal street & sidewalks
🏢 Outdated, aging buildings → Design & building heights complement historic neighborhood
Co-developers Vesta Corporation and Sheldon Oak Central celebrated the grand opening of MLK Apartments with city leaders, the governor, and NEF's own Tony Lyons speaking about the development. This opening marks a milestone in the transformation efforts of the Hartford community that began thirty years ago. MLK Apartments offers a mix of unit sizes for households earning 50% and 60% of the area median income with 30 units supported by Project-Based Vouchers. The development is close to the riverfront, historic Colt building and Trinity Health Stadium among other neighborhood amenities.
This redevelopment demonstrates how important it is to think outside the box when it comes to creating and preserving affordable housing. Congratulations to our partners on this tremendous accomplishment!
